The history of Hawaiian workwear began when Japanese immigrants crossed the ocean and began living in Hawaii. Working there required durable work clothes, different from those worn in Japan. When Yasuda Kayoji, founded "The UNION SUPPLY Company" in 1922, he expanded the business by successfully providing high-quality workwear. The company's shirts made from 10-ounce Palaka plaid fabric were of simple construction, yet durable and easy to wear, and quickly gained popularity.
